Swimming into Poetry
Films of swimming in bodies of water paired with poems the water inspired
I have always been attracted to the power and beauty of water. I love the sparkling surface, the transparent color, and considering the possibility of immersion in water. I crave moving into the water to swim. Being near water is a way to tranquility for me and many others. Water creates peace. Water can also activate a range of feelings from being anxious about facing the unknown, to the excitement and anticipation of swimming in a familiar place. I love looking at the water, feeling, and entering the water. I love moving into meditative swimming, the Zen of being in the flow with the water.
But the very water that gives us life is becoming more and more tainted by human activity, both in ways that we can see and in ways that are invisible to our eyes, as in micro-plastics and chemicals in the water. The very water that we depend upon is becoming less available or not potable. In 2019, according to UNICEF, one in three of the world’s population did not have safe water. Globally, more than 785 million people did not have access to at least basic water services and more than 884 million people did not have safe water to drink. Contaminated water can transmit diseases such diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause 485,000 diarrheal deaths each year.
While I do not ask for funding or monetary gain, I would encourage all of you to donate and work for water causes that make a difference in the life of the planet and in the life of all beings. I have recommended some here, and welcome information on others.
Thank you, Mii gwech, Gracias, Merci
Water is a powerful force, necessary for life, but also capable of taking it away. Over 70% of the world is covered with water. Early humans near water learned to swim and to live in harmony with this resource and source of pleasure. And today, many wax eloquent about the wonder of swimming and diving. Our bodies are about 60-70% water. Many of us crave the practice of a hot tub, bath or shower, or being immersed in water. Water activates our brain and lubricates every part of us. Water is life. Water sustains us. Water gives us health and food and transportation. Water gives us purpose and makes life possible.
My films are inspired by water, they are a visual to compare the color and quality of water, and celebrate the idea that indeed, water is life. I created these for myself, but I am happy to share them with organizations or others who advocate for water. Please, ask for permission and give me credit for the films/ poems as these are all under copyright.
